Search Engines

Google

Google is an excellent example of the new generation of search engines. It is quickly becoming a favorite of librarians and patrons both. Here's a picture of the Google opening Page. Googles power and attractiveness are evident several ways. First it doesn't have any advertising, which gives all it's displays a clean easy to read look. Next it arranges the web pages it finds for you based on how many web pages link to that particular web page. That is a kind of statistical most popular web page on a topic. This results in Google finding exactly the web page you are looking for and displaying it right at the top of your list. Finally like Yahoo it allows you to do both keyword searching as well as providing another version of the best subject directory (Yahoos) on the web.

Because Google automatically "ands" together all your search terms you can simply type in any words (particularly nouns) that describe what you're looking for. As usual unique terms work better than common words. You then click on the Google Search Button. The "I'm Feeling Lucky" button will find and automatically connect you to the number one Google match to your search.

Clicking on "browse web pages by category" takes you to the Google version of the Yahoo subject directory. Like Yahoo this is an excellent place to start when you don't know exactly what it is you're looking for.
