Infoseek is a very popular combination search engine. It both indexes web pages and uses humans to create a directory. It also uses a method of interpreting your search phrase that they call ESP. In theory this allows you to use "natural language" for your search phrase such as "I want to make camping reservations at yosemite national park". Judge for yourself how effective this feature can be.
