Getting to Know the Internet

Glossary

Here's a listing of terms you might hear and see. We can use their definitions as a starting point for talking about the Internet.

Internet A vast network connecting computers all over the world
Web World Wide Web (WWW). A text and graphics based system for distributing and accessing information on the Internet
Web Page A document that is part of the World Wide Web and that can incorporate text, graphics, sounds and links to other Web Pages
Browser Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer. A software program that runs on your PC, designed to interact with the Internet for the purpose of viewing Web Pages.
Link Hyperlink. A highlighted (and sometimes underlined) word, phrase or image in a Web document that connects to another document on the Web for example: Arrowhead Library System Home Page
URL Uniform Resource Locator, the World Wide Web address of a document, or other resource, on the Internet. For example http://als.lib.wi.us is the URL for the Arrowhead Library System
Search Engine A type of Web Page designed to enable you to search the internet for specific words, topics, or subjects.
