Glossary
Here's a listing of terms you might hear and see. We can use their definitions
as a starting point for talking about the Internet.
| Internet | A vast network connecting computers all over the world |
| Web | World Wide Web (WWW). A text and graphics based system for distributing and accessing information on the Internet |
| Web Page | A document that is part of the World Wide Web and that can incorporate text, graphics, sounds and links to other Web Pages |
| Browser | Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer. A software program that runs on your PC, designed to interact with the Internet for the purpose of viewing Web Pages. |
| Link | Hyperlink. A highlighted (and sometimes underlined) word, phrase or image in a Web document that connects to another document on the Web for example: Arrowhead Library System Home Page |
| URL | Uniform Resource Locator, the World Wide Web address of a document, or other resource, on the Internet. For example http://als.lib.wi.us is the URL for the Arrowhead Library System |
| Search Engine | A type of Web Page designed to enable you to search the internet for specific words, topics, or subjects. |
